Head to Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin for a glass of vino from an award-winning winery, 45 years in the making. 1972 marked the year that Robert and JoAnn Wollersheim purchased the farm land to restore the winery to its full capacity. Today, the winery now has a little sister, the Cedar Creek Winery, which was also purchased by the family, in 1990.
Today, you can take a tour of the winery with up to 20 people at a time, but be sure to call ahead to make a reservation. If you do not call ahead, and are in a smaller group, you can purchase “day of” tickets at the door. While on the tour, you can expect introductory historical videos, a complete walk outside around the vineyards, and an inside look into the underground limestone aging cellars, where you’ll finish the tour and be invited to come taste the wines in current production. You might want to try the Prairie Blush, a delicious semi-dry blush wine with pink grapefruit and red currant undertones. The Prairie Blush has consistently won awards and has earned Wollersheim the name of being a top rose producer in America.
The tasting is complimentary with the tour (current wines only), but additional flights may be purchased for the added experience. If you’re not much of a wine drinker, and simply along for the ride, don’t worry! Wollersheim has something for everyone, including a distillery on the grounds, as well. Explore the legend of the Wollersheim brandy making, and take a tour of the distinctive distillery, complete with tastings all its own.
