Salina, KS

Salina is an attractive getaway, appealing to all ages! First and foremost, Salina is an arts community. What does that mean? Well, the arts LIVE in Salina. They are unavoidable, and unparalleled in a community of this size. If an arts experience appeals to you, Salina is for you. Concerts, symphony, theatre, public art across the community, exhibitions, and events – all here in the 67401!

The lovingly restored Stiefel Theatre for the Performing Arts was once the 1930’s Watson Theatre, home of vaudeville and movies. Now, it’s an intimately beautiful venue for concerts, comedy and dance. The Stiefel is also home to the Salina Symphony and the Youth Symphony.  The Salina Community Theatre (SCT) presents dramas, musicals, comedies and family theatre in their Sunflower Theatre (black-box) and Kephart Theatre, plus provides education acting, singing and dancing.

Smoky Hill Museum explores regional heritage through exhibits. Their Curiosity Shop is a unique children’s area with hands-on experiences from tornado simulator to radio theatre. Discover Kansas agricultural heritage at The Yesteryear Museum. Contemporary art and related programming are the fare of Salina Art Center. The Art Center Cinema screens films every night, another unlikely arts experience in a smaller city. Dynamic visual arts dot the landscape across the community, from the SculptureTour Salina outdoor exhibit downtown, to murals and intriguing installations. Salina’s love of the arts culminates with the Smoky Hill River Festival the second full weekend of June each year. Every week, Friday Night Live (FNL) presents live entertainment downtown, and on the First FNL each month, an art walk enhances the experience. We may boast of a population of less than 50,000, but citizens and visitors enjoy a vibrant arts culture!

A beautiful Art Deco-inspired streetscape project is underway downtown, creating a pedestrian friendly atmosphere among dining, shopping and entertainment options that are exploding!

Make friends at Rolling Hills Zoo & Wildlife Museum, celebrating their 20th anniversary through 2019. What a treasure this is! Not only will you admire more than 100 species in the zoo, the museum presents a ‘trip around the world’ through diorama exhibits featuring full mounts and animatronics.

A thousand acres of parks feature, golf courses, playgrounds, nature center, an aquatics park and more. On the horizon…the renewal of the Smoky Hill River! At completion, this area will feature walking and biking trails, opportunities to kayak and canoe, venues for events, and a wonderful experience overall. Just north of town – a lavender farm!
